> How administrators can add more IP address spaces in the emnify Portal

> **Note**
>
> Only **Administrators** are allowed to add or remove IP address spaces.

emnify safeguards every SIM with a unique static and private IP address accessible through a VPN.
Custom IP address spaces extend the available IP address spaces and remove the `/24` and `/28` limitations.

#### What are the limitations of /24 and /28 spaces?

The `/24` and `/28` spaces have limited available IP addresses.

A `/24` space provides 256 IP addresses. However, the first and last IP addresses are reserved for network and broadcast addresses, respectively, leaving 254 usable IP addresses for devices. Likewise, a `/28` space provides 16 IP addresses, 14 of which are usable for devices.

With custom IP address spaces, organizations are assigned `/16` IP address spaces by default. A `/16` space provides 65,534 usable IP addresses, so making this the default significantly extends the available IP addresses for your devices.

With custom IP address spaces, your organization can:

* Retain any already allocated IP address spaces.
* Allocate new IP address spaces from *shared* ([RFC6598](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc6598.txt) 100.64.0.0/10) and the *private* ([RFC1918](https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc1918.html)) address spaces as follows:
  * Private ranges available to device IP addresses are `10.192.0.0/12`, `10.112.0.0/12`, `10.176.0.0/12`, `10.56.0.0/13`, `10.136.0.0/13`, `10.208.0.0/13`, and `10.224.0.0/13`.
  * Any shared range is available except `100.64.0.0/24`.

By default, you're assigned `/16` IP address spaces in `100.64.0.0/10` (RFC6598) and don't need to configure it explicitly.

> **Warning**
>
> You can't allocate overlapping IP address spaces, for example, `10.176.0.0/12` and `10.176.0.0/24` or `10.188.33.16/28`.

To add a new IP address space, [log in to your emnify account](https://portal.emnify.com/sign) and follow these steps:

1. Navigate to [**Device Policies**](https://portal.emnify.com/device-policies) and go to **IP Address Space Management**.
2. Click **Add new IP address space** to open the modal.
3. In the **IP Address Space** field, enter the range you want to allocate.
The field contains a provided network prefix by default, but you can customize it.
4. Review and click **Apply**.

#### Seeing a predefined list instead of a form?

Some organizations choose from a predefined list of 10 IP address spaces instead of entering a custom range.
If you see this list after clicking **Add new IP address space**, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to [**Device Policies**](https://portal.emnify.com/device-policies) and go to **IP Address Space Management**.
2. Click **Add new IP address space**.
3. Choose one of the predefined spaces and select **Apply**.

Once added, you can see the count of IP addresses allocated to your devices and the number of available IPs in the space.

> **Info**
>
> The status reads **Not in use** until an IP is assigned.
> Once assigned, the status changes to **Assigned to devices**.
> You can't edit or remove the IP address space if your devices use it.

## Remove an IP address space

To remove an IP address space, disassociate all IP addresses from your devices.
Then, follow these instructions:

1. Find the space you no longer need in the **IP Address Space Management** section.
2. Click **Delete**.
