> Learn how to add and manage automation rules based on SIM-related events.

The following guides help you get the most out of **Automations** in the emnify Portal by walking you through common tasks such as adding rules and customizing the events log.

## Events log

You can view event logs and customize the table display under the [**Events log** tab](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/events-log).
This helps you to investigate device and SIM activity.

### Customize the table

The customizable table gives you full control over how your event data is displayed.
For more information, see [Customize tables in the emnify Portal](/portal/how-tos/customize-tables).

### Export the events log

You can export the events log as a CSV file for offline analysis in tools like Excel, Google Sheets, or BI platforms.

> **Note**
>
> Exports include the first 500 rows in your current table view.
> The export respects applied filters, sort order, and visible columns.

In the Portal, go to **Automations** > [**Events log** tab](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/events-log).

Adjust the table view if needed:

* Apply [filters](/portal/how-tos/filter-tables) (for example, date range, event type, or severity).
* Show or hide columns using the [Customize tables](/portal/how-tos/customize-tables) feature.
* Reorder columns to change the order in the exported CSV.

Click **Export**.

Confirm and select **Download**.
A `.csv` file is saved to your computer.

## Rules

Learn how to add and manage automation rules based on SIM-related events.
Rules let you automate responses to specific SIM or device activity.
When triggered, rules can perform actions such as sending email notifications to keep your team informed in real-time.

You can create and manage rules in the [**Rules** tab](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/rules) in the emnify Portal.

### Prerequisites

Before you start, make sure you have:

* Access to the emnify Portal
* Permission to manage automation rules in your Workspace

### Add a rule

#### Step 1: Open the rule creation dialog

In the Portal, go to **Automations** > **Rules**

Click **Add rule**.

In the **Set up your Rule** dialog, click **Edit** next to the default rule name to give it a descriptive name (optional).

#### Step 2: Select the trigger

Under **When this happens** > **Event**, select the type of event that should trigger the rule:

Click the **Choose event type** dropdown.

Select an event from the predefined options.

Review the event description to understand when the rule is triggered.

> **Warning**
>
> The event type cannot be changed once the rule has been created.

#### Step 3: Configure custom event parameters (if applicable)

If you selected a [custom event](/portal/automations#custom-events) as the trigger in the previous step, configure the required parameters specific to the chosen event template.

> **Warning**
>
> Custom event parameters cannot be changed after rule creation.
> To adjust parameters later, you must duplicate the rule and apply the new settings.

#### Step 4: Determine the target

Use the **Define target** section to narrow down which devices or SIMs the rule applies to.

You can target:

* **All devices**
* **Coverage policy**
* **Service policy**
* **Tag**

If using a policy (Coverage or Service) or tag:

Select your preferred target from the dropdown.

A **Values** dropdown appears with your configured policies or tags.

Select one or more values (up to 20).

* The count shows how many policies have been added.
* Use the corresponding **X** to remove an individual policy.
* To remove all selected policies or tags, click the **Reset all**.

If using tags:

Select **Tag** from the dropdown.

In the **Value** input, enter a tag and press the `Enter` key to add it.

* Use the **X** icon to remove an individual tag.
* To remove all tags, click the **Reset all**.

Repeat for up to 20 tags.
Devices with any of the selected tags are included.

> **Tip**
>
> You can also upload a CSV file containing tag values.

#### Step 5: Define the notification

Under **Then do this** > **Notification**, define who should be notified when the rule is triggered.

In the **Enter email to assign** input, type an email address.

Press the `Enter` key or click **Add** to confirm.

* Add up to 10 email addresses.
* The **Current subscribers** count indicates the number of email addresses that have been added.
* Use the **X** icon to remove an email.
* To remove all emails, click the **Reset all**.

#### Step 6: Review and create the rule

Review your rule settings.

Click **Create** to save the rule.

The newly created rule appears at the top of the list.
It shows the:

* Rule name
* Number of times it has executed
* Event type
* Notification method

### Edit a rule

You can update an existing automation rule in the emnify Portal to change the target or the notification subscribers.

> **Note**
>
> Triggering events cannot be changed once the rule has been created.

In the emnify Portal, go to **Automations** > [**Rules**](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/rules).

Click anywhere on the rule you want to edit.

In the **Event** section, review the rule's details:

* Triggering event description
* **Last changed** date
* **Created at** date
* **Created by** (user name)

Make any necessary changes to:

* Target (devices, policies, or tags)
* Notification subscribers (email addresses)

When you're finished, click **Save**.

> **Check**
>
> Your updated rule takes effect immediately.

### Pause or resume a rule

You can temporarily turn off an automation rule to stop it from triggering notifications.
Paused rules remain in your list and can be resumed at any time.

In the emnify Portal, go to **Automations** > [**Rules**](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/rules).

Find the rule you want to pause or resume.

To pause, switch off the toggle next to it.
When a rule is paused:

* Notifications are disabled.
* The rule moves to the bottom of the list under **Paused Rules**.

To resume the rule, find it in the **Paused Rules** section and switch the toggle back on.

### Duplicate a rule

You can duplicate an existing automation rule to create a new one with similar settings.

In the emnify Portal, go to **Automations** > [**Rules**](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/rules).

Find the rule you want to duplicate.

Click **Quick actions** > **Duplicate**.

In the configuration dialog, update any parameters as needed.

When you're finished, click **Create**.

### Delete a rule

You can permanently delete an automation rule if it's no longer needed.

In the emnify Portal, go to **Automations** > [**Rules**](https://portal.emnify.com/automations/rules).

Find the rule you want to delete.

Click **Quick actions** > **Delete rule**.

In the confirmation dialog, review the details and click **Delete rule**.

> **Warning**
>
> Deleted rules cannot be recovered.
