> Define the device to be used with the SIM

To use a SIM, you must create a virtual representation of the device associated with it.

## Add a device in the emnify Portal

You can create a new device either:

* As part of the [SIM registration process](/quickstart/register-sims)
* From the [**Connected Devices**](https://portal.emnify.com/connected-devices) page at any time

> **Tip**
>
> To create a device in factory test mode (available with the Plus or Pro Package), see [Activate FTM while creating devices](/services/factory-test-mode#activate-ftm-while-creating-devices).

Start device creation.

* **During SIM registration**: After registering your SIM, select **Create devices**.
* **From Connected Devices**: Click **Add device**.

Name your device and assign a service policy and coverage policy.
Optionally, add tags, indicate the IP address, [lock the IMEI](/services/security#imei-lock), or assign a SIM (required to bring the device online).

> **Info**
>
> If you're creating multiple devices after registering a SIM batch, the device names auto-increment:
>
> ```txt
> Test Device # Your specified name
> Test Device-1
> Test Device-2
> Test Device-3
> ...
> ```

Set the **Device status**.
Skip this step if you didn't assign a SIM.

The device status determines the status of the assigned SIM:

| Device status | SIM status |
| ------------- | ------------ |
| Enabled | Activated |
| Disabled | Issued |
| Factory Test | Factory Test |

**During SIM registration**:

* If you select **Skip**, newly registered SIMs stay in **Issued** state.
* For SIM batches, the selected status applies to entire batch.

Review your device details, then click **Create device**.

Once created, your device should be ready to go online if:

* It's [configured with the correct APN](/apn-configuration)
* Data roaming is enabled
* Device status is **Enabled** or **Factory Test**

## Create devices with the emnify REST API

You can create one device or multiple devices in bulk using the emnify REST API.
For step-by-step instructions, see [Create endpoints in the Developer documentation](/developers/connectivity/create-endpoints).

## Insert the assigned SIM

> **Note**
>
> Skip this step if your device already has an embedded SIM.

Insert the registered and assigned SIM into the device, then power it on.
For next steps, see [APN configuration](/apn-configuration).
