Rename devices in bulk
Keeping your device list organised is essential, whether managing a large fleet of devices or a few. The emnify Portal allows you to rename several devices using bulk actions. Common use cases for bulk renaming include indicating that devices are no longer in use or updating the device names to match your internal naming conventions.
Bulk device renaming is done in Connected Devices.
Create a CSV file with new device names
Before you begin, create a comma-separated values (CSV) file with the new device names. You can use Reports to export a list of ICCIDs as a starting point.
Using Excel to create or convert the CSV file may change the format of the ICCIDs. Double-check that the ICCIDs have no punctuation before uploading the file.
Please note the following limits:
- Maximum file size: 400 KB
- Maximum rows: 500
- Formatting: The file must have two columns with the ICCID and the new device name.
- Naming conventions: Device names can't contain commas
,
or semicolons;
as those are used as separators in the CSV file.
Upload the CSV file to the emnify Portal
- Navigate to Connected Devices.
- Click the More button in the top right corner of the device list and select Rename devices.
- Drag and drop the file or select Browse file to find the file you want to import.
tip
You can download an example CSV file to see the correct format.
- Verify the file name and line count are correct, then click Confirm.
info
Upload can take up to 15 minutes, depending on the number of devices, but you aren't blocked from using the Portal and navigating to another page during this time.
Once the CSV is uploaded, you receive a summary report with the number of devices that were successfully renamed and any errors that occurred. Possible reasons for errors include:
- The device with the specified ICCID doesn't exist
- The ICCID is invalid (for example, it contains punctuation or it exceeds the maximum length of 22 characters)
- The device name is invalid (for example, it exceeds the maximum length of 45 characters)
