Manage satellite connectivity in the emnify Portal
Identify satellite connections and usage
Connected Devices lets you identify which devices are attached to a satellite non-terrestrial network (NTN). This information is available in the Connection column, which shows SAT when you establish a connection. Satellite usage is also displayed separately from terrestrial cellular network usage.
If a device is attached to a satellite NTN, the Connection column in the Device Details page displays Skylo, NonTerrestrial 883.
Allow or block satellite data
You can permit or block your devices' satellite data usage in the service policy. Follow the steps corresponding to your Portal interface.

Find your desired service policy in the Service Policies section and click Details.
-
Toggle the Satellite Data switch to allow or block satellite usage.
noteThe Devices may use data toggle must be switched on to enable satellite usage.
-
Navigate to Device Policies.
-
Find your desired service policy in the Service Policies section and expand the policy details.
-
In Data, select the NB-IoT (GEO) checkbox under Satellite connectivity to allow or block satellite usage.
noteThe Devices may use data toggle must be switched on to allow satellite usage.
Limit monthly satellite data usage
To protect your monthly data plan allowance from being drained by abusive devices, you can configure a monthly usage limit for satellite data in the service policy. The satellite limit restricts the monthly consumption per device on the selected service policy and helps preserve your data allowance from unexpected losses.
If a service policy has a cellular or satellite limit set, all data is blocked once either limit is reached. For example, suppose you set a cellular data limit of 100 MB and a satellite data limit of 10 KB, and then your device reaches the satellite limit. In that case, your device is blocked from using both satellite and cellular data for the rest of the month.
When you set a data limit for your devices, you need to ensure that they don't try to connect every few seconds once the limit is reached. It's your responsibility to introduce a random backup timer.
Set limits
To set a monthly satellite data usage limit, follow the steps corresponding to your Portal interface.
Consider the cost of satellite data and set your limit 10% lower for accurate tracking.

-
Navigate to Device Policies.
-
Find your desired service policy in the Service Policies section and click Details.
-
Ensure the Devices may use data toggle is switched on.
-
Use the Monthly Satellite Limit dropdown menu to select the limits based on your device usage.
Changes save automatically. In this example, the limit changed from No limit to 500 Bytes.
- Log in to your emnify account.
- Navigate to Device Policies.
- Find your desired service policy in the Service Policies section and expand the policy details.
- In Data, ensure the Devices may use data toggle is switched on and you've selected the correct radio access technology (RAT) types. Then, click Edit next to Satellite Data Limit.
- Fill in your Satellite Data Limit details as follows:
- In the Manage Satellite Data Limit field, enter a non-negative number with up to two decimal places and select a unit.
- For Schedule period, choose an option.
- In the Warning event threshold field, enter a number for the percentage. You see an event after your devices reach this percentage.
- Click Save.
The limit is applied to each device associated with the selected service policy. The limit is valid for the current month and resets to 0 on the first day of each month.
Turn off limits
To remove any monthly satellite data usage limits, follow the steps corresponding to your Portal interface.

In the Monthly Satellite Limit dropdown menu, select No limit.
- Click Edit next to Satellite data limit.
- Select Reset all next to Manage satellite limit.
- Click Save.
You should see Set limit as the value for Satellite data limit in the policy details.
Don't switch off the Devices may use data toggle as this completely turns off data connectivity and takes your devices offline.
Allow or block connections to specific satellite networks
You can allow or block connections to specific satellite networks using the coverage policy assigned to your device.
- Log in to the emnify Portal.
- Navigate to Device Policies.
- Find your desired coverage policy in the Coverage Policies section and expand the policy details.
- In Coverage areas, switch the toggle next to the satellite network you want to allow or block (for example, Satellite NTN-IoT).
